This Slate Floor in Houston Gained an Elegant Finish Thanks to a Stone Sealing Service
October 05, 2017
We conducted a double restoration for a homeowner in Houston who wanted to improve the appearance of her home's stone floors. She decided to reach out Sir Grout Houston, the company she had recently hired to restore and seal the grout in her master bathroom. For this occasion, she called us to specifically ask for our stone sealing services in Houston.Grout sealing had been the perfect solution to simplify cleaning in her bathroom. At that time, we color sealed the grout to make it water-, stain-, mold- and mildew-resistant while also changing its color so it would match the tiles. The homeowner was impressed by the change, and was even more amazed when she realized that cleaning the grout had become such a simple task, given that most of the dirt sat on top of the sealant and was easy to remove. Hoping to revamp and seal another one of her bathrooms, and to refresh the slate floor of her living room, she gave us a call to set up a date for us to revisit the property.
Our team was thrilled to hear from this client again. We're always glad when homeowners are so pleased with our services they decide to make Sir Grout Houston their first choice for all their grout and stone restoration needs. We gladly agreed on a day to go and inspect the floors.
The Houston resident welcomed us on the appointed day and showed us the rooms she wanted us to examine. First, there was the living room's floor; it was a large surface covered in beautiful slate tiles. This natural stone stands out from others for its diversity of colors and shades that are often multi-colored with interesting patterns such as the one this homeowner had. However, improper cleaning methods and daily wear and tear made it look damaged and discolored over time. The homeowner wanted to bring out the natural colors in her slate floor, without a high-gloss finish. Secondly, we inspected the property's guest bathroom and concluded a deep cleaning was needed to whiten the thin grout lines around the ceramic tiles that resembled wood.
After a thorough inspection, we came up with the perfect plan to restore the floor. Our team offered the client a stone cleaning, plus a sealing service with Sir Grout Houston's proprietary Shield EXT—an acrylic polymer topical sealer that gives slate tiles a satin finish rather than glossy, and would bring back their exotic colors. As for the guest bathroom, we proposed a professional cleaning and ColorSeal service (the same service we did weeks ago for her other bathroom.) The homeowner trusted our expertise, so she agreed to our proposal without a second thought.
The project began a few days later. Our team of technicians started in the bathroom. As usual, we first applied Sir Grout's tile and grout cleaner, let it set in to emulsify the dirt, and used a commercial, high-speed yet gentle scrubber to remove the grime from the thin grout lines and tiles. Once the surface was clean and dry, we applied ColorSeal to the grout using our special tools and techniques to work efficiently, recoloring them to a shade similar to the tile. This process also made them resistant to water, stains, mold, and mildew.
For the slate floor in the living room, we cleaned them carefully to make sure the sealant would adhere to the surface properly. Next, we applied Shield EXT, Sir Grout's special sealant, with a natural fiber brush and distributed it evenly over the entire surface to ensure uniform coverage. This product does not only seal and give surfaces a satin finish, it also makes the stone resistant to chemicals and water damage. It's ideal for stone surfaces like slate, flagstone, or Mexican terracotta tiles, and we always use it when clients prefer a smooth finish rather than glossy.
Just as the homeowner expected, both rooms looked amazing after the procedure. Her living room had recovered its rustic, elegant appearance and the level of shine was exactly what she wanted. Also, the guest bathroom looked spotless after the grout cleaning and recoloring. She was really happy with the outcome and for the fact that she had found a company like Sir Grout Houston that she could rely on every time she wanted to restore the hard surfaces of her home.
Before leaving, we gave her some advice and guidance to maintain the surfaces. We told her that for the sealer to cure properly in both rooms, no one can walk on them for 6 hours, and that full cure will be achieved within 48 hours. Even if surfaces are properly sealed, they still need regular cleaning. We advised the Houston resident to clean them at least once a week using a pH-neutral, non-toxic cleaner, which is safe for grout and won't damage the grout or the sealant. To prevent unappealing stains, we strongly advised her to clean spills as soon as they occur. The homeowner thanked us for all the hard work and the recommendations, assuring we were her favorite home improvement company in the area.
